Pacific Ocean to Land of Volcanos
On our first night in Lima we were introduced to the national drink – Pisco Sour. Our new phrase has become “let’s get pisco’d” We had a great night in Lima eating local food washed down with local wine and music. Staying in the Miraflores area of Lima is the best as its right there on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific.
Peru – our final country and we are going to explore this land of mystery more than Argentina and Brazil. We have 10 days here and start with Lima on the Pacific Ocean followed by a quick flight to Arequipa, Peru’s second city , surrounded by volcanoes.
Landing at the tiny airport of Arequipa is always a joy. As soon as we got of the plane we got a fabulous view of one of the city’s 3 volcanoes. Misti the volcano can be seen from so many parts of the city.
I love this city with its colonial architecture and location at the foot of 3 volcanoes – Misti, Pichu Pichu and Chachani. The main square comes alive at night and even the bin men drive around the square at 9 pm with music like an ice cream van to call the restaurant staff to bring their rubbish out. Sitting on a balcony above the square for dinner was very magical.
The food market was also an eye opener – they have 3000 types of potato in Peru. I wonder how many are here.
